Friendship Missionary Baptist Church

3400 Beatties Ford Road
Charlotte, NC 28216

Friendship had outgrown the building that had housed their ministry for nearly 40 years. They needed a new facility that would accommodate their rapid membership growth and expanision in ministries, yet not lose touch with their rich history, openness, and warmth. With the design leadership of Gantt-Huberman Architects, a new facility has been constructed that wonderfully accomplishes these objectives.

The open feel of the large sanctuary is created by a central clerestory to make effective use of day-lighting during sunny hours. For night use, Elliptipar indirect fixtures were installed to light the vaulted ceiling stimulating an ethereal impression while contributing to the even lighting of the space. Additionally, wall-mounted Elliptipar fixtures were used for indirect lighting of the sloped wood ceiling to provide uniform lighting with a soothing warm tone.

In keeping with tradition, the church felt it was important that the stained-glass windows tell a story to reflect their history and beliefs while adding color and beauty to the space. Of particular significance, a large 20 foot by 30 foot stained-glass window is set above the baptistry facing the parking area. The intricate glass patterns require bright, uniform lighting to be fully appreciated when viewed from the parking lot. To create the proper illumination, wallwash fixtures from Elliptipar were used to light a wall behind the stained-glass. The reflected light from the wall lends the window a gorgeous luminosity.
