Mountain Island Library
Mecklenburg County Public Library
4420 Hoyt Galvin Way
Charlotte, NC 28214
As you walk up to this new facility that services the Mountain Island community, you would think you are approaching a mountain lodge. Jenkins-Peer Architects has created an attractive building that the community can take pride in and enjoy visiting for hours at a time.
A key ingredient to the relaxed atmosphere of the reference area is the comfortable, uncluttered lighting. This is achieved through effective use of natural daylighting and artificial indirect lighting. Elliptipar metal halide fixtures are wall mounted on either side of the reference area. These nearly disappear from view while uniformly lighting the ceiling for even, glare-free illumination of the task areas. Visitors can comfortably browse, read, and research anywhere in the space.
The stack areas are supplemented with suspended indirect/direct fixtures from Peerless. The exposed ceiling decking was painted a reflective white to maximize the impact of the indirect lighting.
To add sparkle and assist orientation, Con-Tech Magellan low-voltage rail lighting was added to highlight the customer service areas.
