Belk is  a regional retailer who's mission is  selling merchandise that meets customers' needs for fashion, quality, value and selection. In keeping with their mission they wanted to deliver a better shopping environment, while keeping capital and operational costs in check so they could offer value.
 
The main sales area had been lit with 18 cell parabolics for many years.  Our mission was to modernize the stores and light the sales floor area to a comparable light level. This was to be accomplished within the restrictions of  maintaining a reasonable budget while driving maintenance and energy costs down.
 
The RT5 from Lithonia Lighting was selected to illuminate the main sales area. This product allowed for an energy consumption reduction average of 42% and a disposal waste reduction of over 75%. This change from parabolics to the RT5 will save 119,986 lbs of carbon dioxide, 877 lbs of sulfur dioxide, and 465 lbs of nitrogen oxide from being released into our environment over the next 10 years.  Belk will now only be disposing of 1,432 T5 lamps over the next 10 years, versus 3,249 T8 lamps.  Because of the lamp size and life differences, this will reduce raw materials used to support the lighting over the life of the store by over 75%. (e.g.  Over 5000 square feet of glass and the embedded energy used to make and dispose of this glass will be saved over the next 10 years because of this change. Mercury disposal, a minor component of the lamp, but lethal in the environment, will be reduced by over 75% also.)
